Program, reception for ‘Memoirs of Henry Obookiah’ update Thursday
The Woman’s Board of Missions for the Pacific Islands will present a special program and book launch for the newly revised “Memoirs of Henry Obookiah” from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Haili Church, 211 Haili St., Hilo.
A reception and book signing follows until 7 p.m. at Lyman Museum, 276 Haili St.
Originally published in 1818, the story of Opukahaia, “Obookiah,” is a story of healing, renewal, faith and “a new life everlasting” that inspired a generation of missionaries to leave New England and travel to the Sandwich Islands.
The event is free, but space is limited. Reservations are required; call 935-5021.
Copies of the book will be available for $20. Proceeds will benefit Lyman Museum and the women’s board, which supports various organizations that minister to women and children throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.
